Developed by the Apollo Theatre as a staged adaptation of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ book Between the World and Me, the Apollo’s Between the World and Me: A Witnessing began for me a BA Mentoring course on dramaturgy taught by Talvin Wilks. This is where I discovered dramaturgy as an act of development and where I began to react personally to the text that I was reading in a sort of creative and organizational impulse. I was an assistant dramaturg on the production, parsing the source text into manageable bites to dig into poetically and then transcribing it into a script format.
